Markleeville was established in the 1860’s when a man, Jacob Marklee, built a bridge across the Carson River. Mining silver was all the craze during that time and Marklee was hoping to make his fortune as he transported silver and supplies to other towns such as Silver Mountain City. After Marklee was killed in 1863 Markleeville became the county of seat of Alpine county and today the town is home to the government agencies of the county.

If you’re traveling during the winter months you’ll can only reach Markleeville from the north through Monitor Pass and Ebbett’s Pass due to the large amount of snow that falls.

If you visit Markleeville during the summer months plan on doing a little camping and fishing since the surrounding area is pristine and begs for days spent in the great outdoors. There are several places to stay if you’re not a camper, just make sure that you call ahead to reserve a room during the summer months.
