Alpine County California

Alpine County is located in the eastern part of the state, on the Nevada / California border. During the gold rush, it was the discovery of silver that brought miners to this area, increasing the population to over 11,000. Silver Mountain City was booming through the 1860's but the silver became too difficult to retrieve for a profit and prices plummeted.

The mines then closed in the early 1870's, reducing the population to fewer than 1200. As Silver Mountain City became a ghost town, Markleeville continued as a supply and shipping centre for local farmers and ranchers.
Alpine County Museum
Today, you can visit the Alpine County Museum Complex in Markleeville, to marvel in the rich history of the County. Displays of 19th century equipment and tools, history of the inhabitants such as Native Americans, mining and even early pioneers can be seen in the museum. As well, the original log jail, which was moved to Markleeville from Silver Mountain City, is a wonderful piece of times gone by.
Located between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite, The county provides many outdoor recreations such as fishing, hunting, camping and rafting. Bear Valley and Kirkwood offer excellent skiing and winter snow sports in the Sierra Nevada's. One of the most popular attractions in Alpine County is Grover Hot Springs State Park. Along with 76 acres of campground, many people flock to visit the hot springs nearby.
As ground water seeps into the mountains volcanic magma, it returns to the surface as steam, loaded with dissolved minerals. The hot pool is maintained at 102-104 degrees for bathing, as many believe the spring holds soothing and healing power. Alpine County residents live in a relaxed rural lifestyle with an adventure located just around the corner.
